Her Dutchness | Caro Emerald
A quick straw poll at the University canteen a few weeks ago revealed that nobody had ever heard of Caro Emerald -- not even the know-them-all heard-them-all folks.
Hence, to enlighten the rest of you who haven't had the good fortune of listening to this amazing vocalist and her fiery swing band, I decided to feature her music here.
Dutch artist Caro Emerald's music is mostly sing-along, upbeat jazz hits, with charming videos for most of them. There isn't that tangy soulfulness of Amy Winehouse, but post-Winehouse, I have found a renewed appreciation for these retro-jazz belters.
Her infectious hit "Stuck" was stuck in my head since I first heard it via a friend's FB post a few years ago. A couple YouTube videos later my admiration for her music has just grown considerably. She's a talented performer, and you cannot dislike those swing, mambo, tango, Latin and big band tunes combined with her smoky voice. Also that funky 60s themed style makes her uniquely charming.
Released in October 2010, "Stuck" is the fourth single from her debut album Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor. This album has spent longer at number one in the Dutch charts (27 non-consecutive weeks) than any other.
Here's "Stuck:
Her best song though (according to me) is "A Night Like This", it reminds me of the old Dean Martin tracks like "Volare" and "Ain't That a Kick in the Head". Take a look:
Another favourite, "Riviera Life":
