“Let It Go” – Straight No Chaser @ Of Minds & Mixtapes

Straight No Chaser is a men’s a cappella group from Indiana University, started in 1996. They are quite the deal: the captivating sound of 10 unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music moving people in a fundamental sense.

It was while looking for more versions of 'Let It Go' from Disney's Frozen, that I stumbled upon these guys, and boy, I am glad I did! I watched Frozen about four months ago, and the song has been stuck in my head ever since. It's not my song of the year, but it is the song I've heard the most this year. Most people, young and old alike, seem to like it. Besides the fact that it has a kick-ass philosophy --to be authentic, to be our true selves, not to let anyone or anything else determine who we are-- it is catchy, and it is quite powerful. Idina Menzel's version sure won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 86th Academy Awards, and is the first song from a Disney animated musical to reach the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 since 1995, when Vanessa Williams' "Colors of the Wind" from Pocahontas peaked at number four on the chart, but I liked the rendition by Straight No Chaser, partly because a capella bring something new, fresh and moving to the song. Here's Straight No Chaser's version of "Let It Go":
